11. Delta Forces
Like the meandering of a river, architecture is a product of its past informing its future. It builds upon itself, creating complex ecosystems that iteratively change, regenerate, and produce more. Delta Forces reanimates this natural force in architectural form by embracing water as a vector of change, not just destruction. Through the transplantation of hydrographic processes found in the dynamic Okavango Delta to the meticulous and stationary Rhine-Maas Delta, the site of Laakhaven-Oost is reconnected to its context and recentralised as a key node in its urban ecosystem.
The final space is a public aggregation, inexperiencable in its totality and instead presenting a unique human scale to each visitor. The multi-level experience exists as a harmony of function, with a community centre, library, archive, exhibition spaces, workshops, cafes, and aeroponic farm, organised to accentuate their purpose and reduce interference. Existing structures like the under-canal carpark, plaza, and apartment buildings have been selectively reused, demolished, and built within, acting to entrench the structure in its site, allowing it to become an inseparable extension of its context and community.
