10. Kids Health

Architecture is medicine. The human habitat is the built environment, therefore just like any other species, when our ecosystem is out of balance, our health is impacted. Sometimes this is for the worse, however design that understands the intrinsic link between our body and the world can also be the solution. For example, allowing assisted living patients control over there room décor can significantly reduce mental distress, improving public transport infrastructure, cycle paths and other alternative transport fosters better physical health, consistent access to nature can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression and some research even suggests the addition of windows in ICU rooms reduces hospitalisation times. Architectural design is not just an exercise in theory, it has real implications for its inhabitants, and as designers we must ensure it is for the better, not worse.
