02. Cadigal Space
Architecture is rarely singular. Whether that be in its habitation, function, concept, or meaning, buildings are defined by their multiplicity. They feature as characters in the perspectives of those who experience them, so why should the design process be any different?
The Cadigal study space is a product of unique and conflicting design layers that have produced the architectural action of concealing and revealing. From an initial activated sketch to a complete space catering for two opposing occupants, the process of design traverses the complexities of opposition by creating layers of permeability. The concentric rings form a spectrum of increasing privacy as you move towards the centre, with intermixed carve outs, protrusions and vine screens managing the internal conditions. The architecture allows the occupants visibility to the world to remain discretionary without severing their connection to ventilation, light, greenery and the landscape. Its external fabric is visually ambiguous, presenting as somewhat utilitarian and ruinous. in turn it exists as an inconspicuous inevitability of a busy site, adding to its visual story without enforcing its own presence. Its many conceptual layers left to be concealed or revealed uniquely depending on the individual experience.
